Why 8/18/2011 was a good day.

The flames from the torches warm my face as the clamoring of calling me a heretic are near deafening. The feverish crowd in orange robes comes ever closer then I speak. I speak because this is not our first winter of discontent. "We have become used to disappointment!" I shout, confusing the crowd ever so slightly. The pitchforks and torches lower and a look of confusion sets in. As if something was collectively remembered. "Every six months. Every six months" is an ever growing chant.

No we remember. The growing stale from CES 2009 to a launch on the nation's 3rd largest carrier. The minor spec bump while leaving Sprint faithful forgotten. Palm's eventual sale to HP after marketing and hardware failures. "The event" of 2/9/2011 leaving another six months for hardware to become old news and Dead on Arrival. Then "The announcement" came.

One solitary man's statement that set the world we know ablaze. No longer will HP deal in consumer level hardware. A company that has made a name is now abandoning what made it so huge and powerful. The entire world responds, HP stock plummets 20% the following day.

A small flock of vultures have gathered around the crowd and myself. Ghastly scavengers feeding off the idea that a once great mobile OS is now suffering the same fate of lesser opponents. They do not care how tainted the meat they feast upon is, just as long as it is nourishing.

My orange clad brethren look terrified by this ever growing group of carnivorous fowl. I whisper.

"We must hold strong, this has been done before!" and without hesitation I remember a company that others thought was mad for doing the exact same thing 6 years ago. IBM stock buckled, vultures gathered, and the company remains strong.

I present a case to the crowd. Hardware has been our major problem. No company in the history of mobile has managed to have both an incredibly powerful OS with near unlimited potential and also been in charge of creating what it is running on. webOS has never treated me like a child or told me I could not do something. Only our hardware has limited us." The once appealing fruit is now abandoned as the vulture flies away.

A green tinged crow flies overhead with a mechanical squawk. "webOS has had a shortage of apps, but only in quantity and not in quality. We have once again been limited by stale hardware that is not appealing to developers." The crow departs, but I'm sure an offspring will be out in the next three months looking even more falsely impressive.

Sounds of rustling clothes are breaking out between the factions of the crowd. An odd sounding elder sounds off "We must remain strong!" A calm has settled when we can all see each other for what we have in common. We have something that can become great.

"Today, we sit at a cusp. Two giants are fighting for control. One is making a huge purchase to control 1/3rd of potentially all hardware and updates for it's OS. The other is the current champ with more wins than can be counted. Lately, those wins are coming in the form of judges preventing the challenger from having a fair fight. However, this fight will more than likely end in a macabre fashion"

"The challenger is popular, but his moves are far from graceful even with hardware over twice as powerful as ours. The champion has made many enemies on his path to success and has a history that only points to another low point. Freedom is a great thing"

"We are now free from our otherwise lackluster hardware. HP" the crowd shrieks and hisses "HP has finally made a correct decision!" A silence falls as we realize the End of Days has happened.

"Yes, HP has killed our hardware. Our hardware was our problem." I stop speaking and slowly draw and point to the glyphs that have been inscribed on a nearby stone wall.

The one known as Samsung who has given much power to the domineering fruit has now been spurned for following the Challenger. Rancid Apple bits have harmed and are continuing to plague Samsung. An antidote may have been found. One that Samsung may find bitter to swallow, but cannot argue with the results as compared to it's current placebo.

The biggest fight we have seen is threatening to bring down the entire sphere. Two competitors do not make innovation, competition makes innovation. Bruce Lee did not become a master martial artist by himself or by sticking to Eastern Philosophy. Bruce Lee also studied other greats including the boxer Jack Dempsey's stance and punches.

"We are worthy." begins to build to a roar from the crowd. A small crowd that has the voice of a far larger crowd and has proven it time and time again. One fresh scribble on the stone wall has given us hope.

We are left to hope and wait out this winter once again. We have weathered some harsh seasons before, but this one could prove deadly and quite long. We must hold together and let our voice be known. #webOS

Life is good(er)

In the last installment of my quest for stardom and fortune something huge has happened.

Not really. I am set to receive keys to the store I work at so I can now close up on certain nights and run reports about how terrible we are doing. Plus since I'm so great at my job I now get to work the incredibly busy first Sunday in February known as Super Bowl Sunday. Yeah, that sucks.

Now onto something completely different.

Me and two other individuals now have secured an investor and looking to open up a bar/restaurant in the Wheeling area come late March/early April. I'm really looking forward to it because I'll be in charge of day to day operations and should be making serious bank. This is one small step because the investor is also looking to expand into this foray with more restaurants and bars in the near future. I guess when I put my mind to something and admit powerlessness over others things work out.

Life is going good. Oh, and my computer now works flawlessly. Mad props to Ubuntu. That'll be the last time I use "mad props", I promise.

Time pt. 2

Well, the title isn't going to be all about time. Just figured I'd mention it after having to dig around Microsoft's website for a Service Pack 3 cd image for XP. I'm just praying that it works.

In the meantime, a friend of mine sent me this video. I think it deserves to go viral on at least one blog.

Time

It's quite amazing how much things can change in a few months, let alone years. I've been thinking about this more lately after looking over old pictures and also scavenging the internets for outdated information that needs to be updated. Things even seem to be changing faster these days than I expected.

For example, I'm going through a website that process payments for a local event that took place last April. Not only did the hosting server change (including the url), but I also noted how dated some of my humor had become. Mainly I find this with the line:

I know you college kids try not to read anything longer than a tweet or facebook status update these days.

Not only does it make me think of the terminology being dated in the future, but also thinking of the various other social networking sites and forums I have belonged to over the years. Some things to miss, others *cough*myspace*cough* are gladly forgotten.

I've been enjoying data transmission since D-to-the-O-to-the-S and BBS. Sadly though, it seems the more people that join the more intertwined and outdated things become at a faster pace. Damn you price of progress!

Anyway, back to making a cheap html site for cheap money.

Not a whole lot new...

...stupid PC has a virus on it and been a bit busy as of late.

I'm now a full time employ at a job I love, even though it pays shit. Mainly because it's satisfies both my severe hatred and lesser hatreds (some might call it love) for human beings. Figures that I find metaphysical joys in being a cashier at a convenience store.

Plus I've also been working on opening up a restaurant/bar in the Wheeling area. Looking to be good so far, but still in a prototype phase and working through the bureaucracy of city politics. But all should be coming into fruition soon with either a huge success or another moment of experience.

Anywho, I'm off for bigger and better things...bed.

To boldly go....

Figured I'd blog about my phone, since I'm madly in love with it. Just got done installing various apps and patches, some of which might get me in trouble eventually if my carrier ever catches on. However, according to the new DMCA ruling I might not have to worry too much.

The phone itself is rather lovely (true multitasking, access to my entire social network, wireless chargine, etc). And is great right out of the box. However, I've recently become entangled in the forums dedicated to the Palm Pre and webOS. Now my Palm Pre Plus is able to do virtually anything (except for play Flash...bastards) that I ask it too.

I'm not too fond of some of the marketing (although this is pretty sweet) and naming of the features. Naming being the main gripe because my favorite feature shares the same name as a corporate buzzword...SYNERGY!

It's a great feature and the word is apt for such a feature. Everything works together, smoothly, and quickly for the most efficient and pleasurable experience one can have on a cellphone today. Soon it'll be beyond the cellphone stage according to Palm's new owner, HP, who is looking to put it on tablets and even filed for this little gem which probably means it'll be out soon.

Since I'm madly in love with my phone I decided to get some needed accessories today. Using my rebate check I ventured into Amazon and checked out the accessories after looking at similar things at another Palm Pre fansite's store. Needless to say, I love Hong Kong and dirt cheap electronics. MiniUSB cord for 86 cents AND free shipping?!?!?! Thank you broken trade system and third world labor practices!

With how often I use my phone and rely on it, I truly believe that PCs will eventually fade into the distance. Sure, workstations will be around for businesses and cubicles. However, cellphones are bridging the gap between phone and computer. Take a look at the Nokia N900 powerhouse specs. Pretty powerful for something in the palm of one's hand. Not to mention that it has a video out feature, can have a bluetooth keyboard hooked up, and runs a very potent version of Linux in the form of Maemo. I, for one, can't wait until the day when I carry my computer in my pocket and simply hook it up to a monitor and use my own foldaway keyboard to write this blog or random other crap on the internets.

Back by (un)popular demand!

Let's see...been a good 4 years since the last update. Got to enjoy the lovely new login process. Scary how big brother Google now logs me in and connects me to virtually every website. I think WebOS and the "Synergy" feature of my Palm Pre Plus might give it a run for it's money and even look better doing it.

Anyway, back to normal ramblings. Let's see here....

Cellphone in 2006: Nokia brick phone with CellularOne (gobbled up by AT&T shortly after it re-bought Cingular). Got the job done and could take a beating.
2010: Palm Pre Plus (AT&T). So complex I sometimes get confused and dropping it makes my heart sink. Plus it was extremely more expensive (both initial and plan) to own.

Car in 2006: Slightly modified 1991 Sentra SE-R. I miss it. :-(
2010: 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. Sucks down gas like no other.

Living in 2006: Dorms at Jesuit
2010: Wheeling Island...

I could go on, but I am already bored. So let's just make a quick list of everything that's happened in the last 4 years that was of significant importance for me in no particular order.

Dropped out of college, Moved into a party house with friends, lost virginity, death rocket (sentra) died, broke wrist, sold off most worldly possessions, grandfather died, mom's health failing, grew a beard, found self, lived with a junkie, went to Canada twice, enjoyed Atlantic City for a weekend, had money, flat broke, telemarketer, Magic: the Gathering, came out of shell.

That's all I can think of off the top of my crazed mind. Anyway, I'll be making regular updates on here since I think there might be one person who comes across this scribbling. Even if not, I'm sure Google is watching.

P.S. "GOOGLE GOOGLE GOOGLE GOOGLE GOOGLE GOOGLE BOMB!"
